The Hunger Games: Catching Fire review. (SPOILERS)

I recently saw The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on the opening night, and what an experience it was.

Having read all three books by Suzanne Collins, the second was by far my favourite. It had built on the solid structure of the first one and had expanded the world, creating an epic feeling. The games had a more shocking and brutal feeling to them and Katniss and Peeta’s relationship was a highlight of the book. So, going into the movie adaption, i had high hopes and felt slightly nervous.

I needn’t have worried. Director Francis Lawrence has given us one of the most stunning dystopian movies in the history of cinema. It is so faithful to the book that diehard fans will love it, and it has plenty of well executed exposition so the uninitiated will feel right at home from the first shot. About 2/3rds of the movie is the aftermath of the first games, the setting up of the second and the spark of the rebellion. This is made in such an enthralling nature that it is just as riveting and as exciting as the games themselves.

The lead up is done so much better than the first one so when i saw Katniss and the other tributes rising up on their platforms to the centre of the arena, my heart was pounding. And a big bonus came out of the first bloodbath that made this one instantly distinguishable from the first: no shaky cam. After that, the action rarely stops to take a breath. Whether it’s giant monkeys, deadly fog, a tidal wave or blood rain, Katniss and her fellow tributes are always kept busy. It’s exhilarating to watch.

As for the acting, Jennifer Lawrence proves once again that she is the best actress working in Hollywood. She portrays aggressiveness, anger, fear and determination so well that all you can do is marvel. She is backed up by the stellar Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson who proved me wrong that he is a weak actor because he looks much more convincing on screen this time around. Woody Harrelson is again fantastic with some of the funnier lines while still being an emotional rock and Elizabeth Banks is given more to work with with a more vulnerable Effie Trinket. Sam Clafin and Jena Malone portray aggressive tributes Finnick Odair and Johanna Mason well with shades of vulnerability usually not seen in characters such as these. Donald Sutherland as President Snow is menacing and sleazy while radiating power. All in all a stellar cast turn in stellar performances.

I love that James Newton Howard kept some of the same themes from the first one while expanding his soundtrack in the second movie. It gives it a great sense of continuation.

The effects of course are top notch, with stunning shots of the capitol and hovercrafts that look so real it’s impossible to tell its CGI. There are excellently crafted live action set pieces with added CGI that blend together so well.

Panem and its 12 Districts are given more depth and really feel like a real world in this epic tale. I loved it from start to finish and can’t wait for the next installment. The final shot of the movie will inspire hope in many, an inspired move by both Lawrence’s.

See it now.

Simon Pegg will be back in ‘Mission: Impossible: 5’.

Recently, we received news that the fifth installment of the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise would open one week after Star Wars: Episode VII on Christmas Day with Christopher McQuarrie directing and Tom Cruise back as Ethan Hunt.

After ‘Ghost Protocol’ was a critical and commercial success, Paramount quickly fast tracked a sequel.

I loved the previous two installments, Paramount chose great directors in J.J. Abrams and Brad Bird for the third and fourth entries and Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher) is another great choice. This franchise doesn’t look like it’s slowing down.

Insidious Chapter 3 set for April 2015 release.

The latest installment in the ‘Insidious’ franchise is set to join the crowded 2015 roster with the third movie scheduled for April.

After James Wan’s second effort on the franchise raked in big money worldwide, Sony Pictures Worldwide announced that we are set to be getting a second sequel.

Personally, i thought the sequel was better than the original, with inventive scares and genuine tension building. I considered myself desensitized to horror, this showed me otherwise. The Black Bride character was one of the scariest entities since Hannibal Lecter, and great acting from Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne put it on a new level.

Did you like Insidious: Chapter 2? Would you be excited for a third movie?

Christian Bale discusses his own Batman voice.

In an insightful clip, Christian Bale discusses his Batman audition for Batman Begins and how he altered his voice.

Bale on his audition: “I got there. They put me in Val Kilmer’s suit. It didn’t even fit properly, and I stood in it and I went ‘I feel like an idiot.’ What kind of guy walks around, dressed like a bat? And is then going to go ‘Hello, how are you? Just ignore that I’m dressed as a bat.’ Of course, he’s meant to be doing this,” Bale said. “If you look at the history of the guy and the pain that he went through. I went ‘I can’t do this in a normal voice. I have to become a beast in order to sell this to myself.'”

Bale on the voice: “I went home that evening, and my wife said, ‘How’d it go?’ I went, ‘I kind of did this.’ And I showed her, and she went, ‘Oh, you f—ed that one up, didn’t you?’ ” he said. “Thank God they went for it.”

Personally, i’m glad Bale got the part, without him, Nolan’s trilogy wouldn’t have been the same.

Adam Driver denies being cast as Nightwing in Batman Vs. Superman.

‘Girls’ star Adam Driver has denied being considered or cast as Nightwing in Batman Vs. Superman.

The rumor, originating from TheWrap, said Driver and two others were being rumored for the part.

These were Drivers comments on the subject: “That’s like intensely flattering as you can imagine. I mean, it’s Batman and Superman, who doesn’t want to be involved in something not only of that scale but of who those characters are. That’s an incredible world to be able to be in for a bit. Like who wouldn’t want to do that?”

Since the Driver rumor is now false, it’s a big possibility that the Nightwing rumor is false also. This would be great news for the movie, which has enough comic book characters as it is. Although i would love to see a Wonder Woman cameo by Jaimie Alexander.

What do you think of Driver’s comments? Do you want to see Nightwing in a movie soon?

Weird poster for fake Wonder Twins movie?

Apparently, Midtown Comics has received a poster for a Wondertwins movie starring Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis.

Obviously, this is fake for two reasons.

1.) We would have known if a Wondertwins movie was being put into production for 2014 a long time ago.

2.) There is no way that Warner Bros. would make a Wondertwins movie before they adapt a way bigger and well known property like The Flash or Wonder Woman.

People are speculating this could be a clever marketing ploy for the upcoming Entourage movie like the fake James Cameron’s Aquaman.

Nevertheless, this is an interesting tidbit and perhaps genius marketing from the studio.

What do you think of this poster?
